Companies That Buy Timeshares: How to Tell Real Ones From Scams
Very few companies actually buy timeshares outright for cash, since the asset itself carries almost no resale value and an ongoing fee obligation most buyers do not want. Most “companies that buy timeshares” advertising is actually a resale listing service, a rental marketplace, or in the worst cases, a scam that never intends to complete any purchase at all.

What a Real Buyer Actually Looks Like
A legitimate direct buyer pays you first, or through a secure, verifiable escrow arrangement, and does not ask you to pay any fee to receive the sale proceeds. If a company claims it wants to buy your timeshare but asks you to pay a processing, transfer, or closing fee before the deal completes, that is not how a real purchase works.
The Common Scam Pattern
- A company claims it has a buyer already lined up for your specific unit, often after an unsolicited call.
- You are asked to pay an upfront fee to cover closing costs, taxes, or transfer paperwork.
- The promised buyer and the payment never materialize, and follow-up calls go unanswered.
How to Verify Before Paying Anything
- Search the company’s name alongside terms like “complaint” or “scam.”
- Check the Better Business Bureau’s public lookup for complaint history and accreditation status.
- Confirm business registration through your state’s Secretary of State office.
- Ask directly whether you will be asked to pay anything before receiving payment, and get the answer in writing.
Resale Brokers Are a Different Category
A licensed resale broker helps market and sell your timeshare to a third-party buyer, earning a commission from the sale rather than buying it directly. This is a legitimate, different service from a direct buyer, and in several states, anyone charging an upfront fee to sell or resell a timeshare on your behalf must be a licensed real estate broker.
If You Cannot Find a Legitimate Direct Buyer
This is common, since direct buyers for timeshares are genuinely rare. Cancellation, rather than continuing to search for a buyer, ends the obligation directly. Our attorney personally reviews your contract and negotiates with the resort, we do not send a case to an unreliable third party and hope it resolves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal to pay a fee before receiving payment for my timeshare? No, this is one of the clearest warning signs of a resale scam.
What is the difference between a buyer and a resale broker? A buyer purchases your interest directly. A broker markets it to a third party for a commission.
